Can Black Box Insurance Really Save You Money?

Whilst black box insurance for young drivers cannot "guarantee" to save you money it can give you a better chance of finding a car insurance policy that is more suited to your needs and at a more affordable price.

Let's face it - any policy, whether black box insurance or regular car insurance, won't suit everybody. Everyone has different needs and requirements so it's ridiculous to think that, just because black box insurance wasn't right for my mate Joe Bloggs it won't be right for me.

In theory - the better you drive, with a black box fitted in the car to record journeys, the cheaper your car insurance will be.

Let's take a look at a few black box insurance facts:

  1. iKube's black box insurance could save young and learner drivers* up to 25% off their first year car cover, however, car insurance premiums are still based on postcodes (i.e. where you live), where you park your car at night (i.e. driveway / garage / road) and of course the car make and engine size. The bigger your car and engine, the more expensive your insurance will be. Hence why iKube advise new drivers to go for smaller cars with lower powered engines.
  2. The black box records the times of day the vehicle is moved. For instance, if you're found to be driving between 11pm - 5am iKube will charge £100. Why? Good question - but the answer is really quite simple. Drivers between the ages of 17 - 25 are statistically more at risk of having an accident than a more mature driver whilst driving late at night. Hence why iKube has introduced this curfew - but don't think of it as "curfew car insurance" - think of it as merely "putting your car to bed".
  3. iKube ALSO tracks other elements of your driving, such as:
    • Speed
    • Mileage
    • Braking
    • The types of roads you drive on
    • etc

Based on this information iKube can look at how you've driven over the course of the year and potentially reward you with up to 40% discount on your renewal policy... as long as you've driven carefully and conscientiously.
In answer to the question- "can black box insurance really save you money?" - yes, in theory black box insurance can save you money but it's important to think about what your requirements are.

You might need to drive late at night, for whatever reason or you simply might not want that restriction in place. It's really up to you but we think the benefits of our black box cover far outweighs any negatives... give us a call and see for yourself.
